Paddington

  • Former Christ Church, Lancaster Gate suffered bomb damage during World War II, the body of the church also had extensive dry rot which led to its eventual demolition. The tower remains and forms part of a development of flats built in the 1980s.

It had had a four-manual Willis organ - demanding to play, with different delays for each manual and the pedals - and there was a strong choral tradition.

The church was well on the way through an extensive interior reordering (to make the internal space more flexible) when it was found that the decorators' brushes were able to penetrate the structural roof timbers. The church was closed abruptly, and the parish was joined with the neighbouring St James, Sussex Gardens. The final Eucharist service took place in the church garden, and the clergy, choir and congregation processed around to St James to share the final hymn with their congregation.

It had been regarded as an outstanding example of a Victorian Church; its spire was compared with that of Salisbury Cathedral.
