What Will I find ?

County, Regional, Town, City or Trade Directories whatever the term used, provide us with valuable detail for 19th and 20th Century research.

  • Directories list people/occupations and addresses
  • They can be searched usually by Location decade and/or key word.
  • not all directories are searchable by all methods

In earlier directories, only notable members of the community maybe listed.

  • Different directories list info in different ways
  • Some by street, with the street names in alphabetical order
  • Some by peoples name, again alphabetically, followed by their address
  • Some include women if they were householders or business people
  • Some are arranged by occupation.

insert Gores Kellys etc

The availibilty of directories varies from area to area, and the time span that they cover also varies. Some continued to be published until farly recent times ( 1970's) although directories do exist from as early as Mid 1700's

insert - they can help us with 20th century research in the absense of census records or known adressses - work in conjunction with electoral registers for tracking family movements

www.historicaldirectories.org is a good place to get an idea of what these directories are like and how to search them
