The window illustrated in the picture dates from 1903, St Mary's, itself however can be dated to the mid 1760's. Originally much smaller, extensions to the building were made in 1826, 1873 and lastly in 1912-13 when the chancel and vestry were constructed. The site has hosted a church since the twelfth century and the current church replaced an earlier example which was destroyed by fire.

St Oswin, became a parish church in 1902, the foundation stone was laid on New Year's Day 1885. The church is one of many throughout the region designed by R J Johnson. Construction was paid for by George Hedley and his intention was the building should be a memorial to his parents, (his father William was a local pioneer of the railways). The Hedley connections continue inside, the chancel screen, organ case and screen and the reredos are attributed to Ralph Hedley, he is also credited with creating the choir stalls in St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle.
